It’s important to know the keywords that potential customers are searching to find results related to your product or service offered. I used three different methods to come up with potential keywords for Scheels. We’ll look at each one of them in more detail.
Method 1
I used a combination of THEHOTH and Ahrefts Free Keyword Generator. I used THEHOTH to do a competitor analysis by using a competitors website to rank keywords associated with them. The competitor I used for the analysis was Dicks Sporting Goods. It is ideal to choose a keyword with low results but a large amount of searches. The keyword result that I felt would be the most applicable to Scheels as well as Dicks was “Sporting goods”.
Once I settled on a keyword, I then went to Ahrefts Free Keyword Generator and entered in the keyword “Sporting goods”. Searching for sporting goods resulted in too broad of results so I modified my search to “Sports equipment”. You want to find a keyword with a keyword difficulty somewhere between Easy to Medium. Easy is going to be better but medium will be a promising result as well. As you can see from the image below, I was able to obtain the keyword “Water sports equipment” inside the red box as one keyword for Scheels.
Method 2
For this method, I made use of both Google Trends and Ahrefts Free Keyword Generator. On Google Trends, I entered a word that I thought could be a potential keyword so I searched for “Athletic clothing”. Towards the bottom of the results page, there is a section titled “related queries” and I changed the filter from rising to top and one of the results was “Athletic wear” as seen below also displayed in the red box.
Then, I entered “Athletic wear” into Ahrefts Free Keyword Generator to find another keyword for Scheels. I searched “Athletic wear” on keyword generator and was able to obtain two more keywords. The first keyword is “Girls athletic wear” which has a keyword difficulty of easy and over 100 searches. The second keyword is “Champion athletic wear” which has a keyword difficulty of medium and over 1000 searches. You can see the search results with the keywords in a red box in the image below.
Method 3
The final method I used was a combination of Google Ads and Ahrefts Free Keyword Generator. I started with Google Ads where you can search multiple keywords that you feel might be relevant at one time. I searched for Hunting, Fishing, Girls athletic wear, and Water sport equipment. Once I entered in the potential keywords, I set the filters to return results with the exact keywords and the top of page bid is greater than or equal to $1. Two higher ranked search results that I felt could generate good keywords with more of a variety from my previous keywords were “Fishing sunglasses” and “Fisherman”. You can see the Google Ads search results with my two chosen words highlighted below.
Once I gathered a couple of words, I went to Ahrefts Free Keyword Generator to collect more promising keywords for Scheels. I first searched for “Fishing sunglasses”. I was able to generate many results with Easy to Medium keyword difficulty but I chose to selected a few results that I felt would be common and relevant search results. The keywords I was able to obtain were “Best fishing sunglasses” and “Polarized fishing sunglasses” as you can see from the image below, once again highlighted by red. Both of these keywords had search results over 1000.
The second search on Ahrefts Free Keyword Generator was for the word “Fisherman”. I again had many results that returned Easy to Medium keyword difficulty but I selected the keyword I felt was the most common and applicable for Scheels products. The keyword I gained from this search was “Fisherman hat”. This keyword has a keyword difficulty of Easy and search results of greater than 1000. You can see the search results in the image below with my selected keyword boxed in with red.
All three of these methods made use of Ahrefts Free Keyword Generator as the final step in determining a promising keyword for Scheels. Each method used a different starting position. The first steps in the methods made use of THEHOTH, Google Trends, and Google Ads. Each method was unique but I was able to collect six total keywords that I felt were the most relevant. Those keyword once again were, “Water sports equipment”, “Girls athletic wear”, “Champion athletic wear”, “Best fishing sunglasses”, “Polarized fishing sunglasses”, and “Fisherman hat”.
